Inside the game

Toni Cipriani returns to Liberty City and works for Salvatore Leone. This prequel revisits the city before the events of Grand Theft Auto III.

Setting: Liberty City, 1998. Original announced platforms: PlayStation Portable.

This entry distinguishes the 3D universe from the other GTA continuities. Shared city names do not establish a shared narrative timeline.

The date above refers to the original release year. Subsequent ports, remasters and editions can differ in controls, features and available music.

Before Claude arrived

Toni Cipriani returns to Liberty City and resumes work for Salvatore Leone. His pursuit of status within the family provides a view of the city’s power struggles before GTA III. Characters who later appear established or influential are encountered while their positions are still being contested.

The game revisits Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale in an earlier state. This creates a useful distinction between recognizing a place and assuming it behaves exactly as it does in GTA III. Roads, businesses and access conditions reflect a different moment in the same 3D continuity.

A portable interpretation

Originally released for PlayStation Portable, Liberty City Stories adapts open-world missions to a handheld format. Motorcycles are available in a city where the earlier GTA III did not offer them, changing the feel of familiar routes. The mission design supports short sessions without abandoning longer criminal storylines.

Toni’s relationships with Salvatore, his mother and competing criminal groups place family expectations alongside violent professional ambition. It is a standalone story, not a mission pack that requires GTA III to play. Later ports should be identified separately from the original PSP release.

How to place it in the archive

For release order, it follows San Andreas. For story chronology within the 3D universe, its 1998 setting places it before GTA III’s 2001 story. Both orders are useful, but they answer different questions: what the developers released next, and what happened earlier in the fictional world.
