Release order records when a game arrived. Story chronology records when its fictional events take place. Universe classification determines which stories can share a continuity. These are three different organizing systems.
GTA and GTA 2 form the early 2D era. GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and the Stories games form the 3D continuity. GTA IV, its expansions, Chinatown Wars and GTA V belong to the HD continuity.
A familiar location or recurring brand can bridge the visual identity of the franchise without proving that every character shares a single history. For an accessible first reading, follow each game’s story separately before exploring cross-references.
