The person behind the name
Dave is publicly associated with the supposed death of Michael Townley in North Yankton. In reality, his relationship with Michael rests on a private arrangement that allowed Michael to establish a new identity. Both men have an interest in preserving that account.
Steve Haines is Dave’s superior and places new pressure on the arrangement. Michael’s work for the bureau therefore carries personal stakes as well as immediate danger. Dave is neither a straightforward protector nor simply another unrelated mission giver.
