The briefing
A good save plan protects the time already invested in a campaign. Use separate slots for ordinary progress, major decisions and experiments. Rotate the ordinary slot as you play, preserve a milestone slot before a consequential mission, and use the experiment slot for cheats or unusual vehicle collecting. Name or record the purpose of each slot outside the game if its save menu only displays mission titles. This simple habit makes a later return much less confusing.
In GTA III, mission order matters to a completion run. Finish Luigi, Joey and Toni’s remaining Portland jobs before Last Requests. That story transition removes access to their unfinished missions. Save before taking it and review outstanding contact markers. Do not assume that opening the next island preserves every assignment on the first one. A backup is useful only if it predates the point where the missing job became unavailable.
For games with narrative choices, keep a save before the decision rather than after its final shootout. GTA IV’s The Holland Play and its late Deal or Revenge decision have lasting consequences. GTA V’s final A, B or C choice also changes the subsequent world state. A replay menu can show a mission again, but it is not a substitute for a campaign save when the aim is to retain another branch’s continuing state. Label your preferred outcome and your comparison save separately.
Before a difficult mission, replenish supplies and save outside the mission. After a long session, confirm that the game actually recorded your progress before closing it. An autosave indicator or checkpoint is not always equivalent to the manual save you intended to preserve. When moving between devices, inspect the destination save list and timestamps before allowing cloud synchronization to overwrite a known-good local file.
For 100% attempts, maintain a short external log: last main mission completed, unfinished contact strands, collectible totals and the next activity planned. Record completion immediately after an activity rather than reconstructing a week of play from memory. Use the checklist for your exact title and edition. Finally, keep an untouched pre-experiment save before testing cheats, mods or save editors. Recovery is much easier when the original campaign state remains available and clearly identified.
