Inside the game
Carl Johnson returns to Los Santos after his mother’s death. His journey expands from neighborhood loyalties to a state-spanning story across Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas.
Setting: San Andreas, 1992. Original announced platforms: PlayStation 2.
This entry distinguishes the 3D universe from the other GTA continuities. Shared city names do not establish a shared narrative timeline.
The date above refers to the original release year. Subsequent ports, remasters and editions can differ in controls, features and available music.
A homecoming across a state
Carl Johnson returns to Los Santos after his mother’s death. His brother Sweet measures loyalty through commitment to Grove Street, while Carl has already experienced life away from the neighborhood. That disagreement gives the opening its emotional stakes: returning home is not the same as being trusted again.
The state includes Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, connected by countryside, mountains, desert and smaller communities. The trip between cities is part of the experience. Rural roads, airfields and isolated properties become important spaces rather than empty transitions between urban maps.
Character growth and everyday systems
CJ develops skills through use, including driving, cycling, flying and individual weapon proficiency. Clothing, hairstyles, food, exercise and physical condition personalize the protagonist. These mechanics make preparation relevant: a player can spend time improving a capability before a demanding assignment.
Gang territory introduces a visible struggle for neighborhoods in Los Santos. It is only one part of the game, however. The larger story moves into racing, vehicle theft, aviation, casino operations and other activities that demand different skills and equipment.
Collectibles and completion
Tags, snapshots, horseshoes and oysters are different collectible sets with different geographic patterns. Treat them as separate projects. Taxi work, emergency services, schools and other optional activities also contribute to a completion-oriented playthrough.
Keep saves at major story transitions. A vehicle or weapon obtained temporarily for a mission should not automatically be treated as a permanent unlock. The mission archive and practical guides distinguish story rewards, world pickups and purchases so that a player can plan around the correct acquisition method.
Story context
The game takes place before GTA III and Vice City’s final chronological position is earlier still. San Andreas belongs to the 3D universe; GTA V’s Los Santos is a new interpretation in the HD universe. A similar landmark or surname is not enough to merge those two histories.
