The person behind the name

Catalina appears in two different periods of the 3D universe. In San Andreas, set in 1992, she becomes Carl Johnson’s robbery partner during his exile from Los Santos. In GTA III, set in 2001, she betrays Claude during a bank robbery and emerges as a leading figure in the Colombian Cartel. Following the dates clarifies the connection between those appearances.

Cesar Vialpando introduces Carl to Catalina, his cousin, as a possible source of work. Their partnership unfolds around the countryside rather than Grove Street’s familiar neighborhoods. The robberies include targets such as a bank, a betting shop and a tanker, creating a distinct chapter built around quick money, improvised escapes and Catalina’s constant pressure on Carl.

Catalina insists on treating the partnership as a personal relationship, shifting rapidly between affection, insults and threats. Carl struggles to keep their dealings focused on the jobs. The resulting exchanges are deliberately uncomfortable and volatile; her willingness to use violence is part of the danger Carl must manage, rather than simply a colorful approach to planning.

Claude enters her San Andreas storyline through the countryside racing scene. His appearance places a future protagonist beside Carl while Catalina turns their interactions into a performance of jealousy and rejection. The episode also connects Carl to a garage in San Fierro, moving his own journey beyond the rural robberies that first brought him to her.

Story spoilers — reveal narrative details

Catalina leaves San Andreas with Claude, establishing the partnership that will end in her shooting him nine years later. In GTA III she directs Cartel operations and repeatedly stands in the way of Claude’s advancement. Their final conflict follows Maria’s kidnapping. The two games show a continuous character history, while giving Catalina sharply different functions as a temporary partner and the central enemy.
