Manual recording starts a clip when you choose; Action Replay buffers recent gameplay so you can keep a moment after it happens. Save a clip before switching to the editing workflow. The original recording is the material from which the project is assembled.

Create a project, arrange clips on its timeline and trim the sequence. Markers control camera position, speed, filters and audio. The free camera offers alternatives to the gameplay view within the recording’s supported area. Use camera blends, depth of field and sound levels deliberately so the edit remains readable.

Director Mode stages scenes with unlocked characters, pedestrians and animals. Its menu changes actors, locations, weather, time and other scene options. A recorded Director Mode scene can then enter the same editing process as captured gameplay.

Availability differs by edition. Rockstar removed the Editor from PS4 and Xbox One in 2024; use the supported PC, PS5 or Xbox Series edition. Check current export and sharing options in your installed version before starting a large project.
