The person behind the name

Claude is the playable protagonist of Grand Theft Auto III. He arrives in the story as a participant in a bank robbery, only to be shot and abandoned by Catalina. His escape from a prison transport brings him to Portland with fellow prisoner 8-Ball. Their practical alliance begins a climb through Liberty City’s underworld driven by work, survival and unfinished business.

Unlike later protagonists, Claude does not explain his motives through spoken dialogue. Other characters give instructions, make assumptions and try to use him. His personality emerges through his willingness to accept dangerous jobs and change employers. This silence leaves room for the player’s interpretation while allowing Liberty City’s louder personalities to dominate the conversations around him.

Early work for Luigi Goterelli and Joey Leone introduces Claude to the Leone organization. Toni Cipriani and Salvatore Leone bring him deeper into its disputes, while Maria complicates his position within the family. The progression teaches the player the city through social connections: each employer opens a different part of its criminal economy.

As the playable map expands, Claude works with the Yakuza and other interests beyond Portland. His relationship with Asuka Kasen gives him a new base after his Leone connections collapse. Catalina remains an increasingly visible adversary through the Colombian Cartel, connecting the broader factional conflict to the betrayal that began his story.

Story spoilers — reveal narrative details

Salvatore attempts to have Claude killed, prompting his move away from the Leone family. The final confrontation follows Catalina’s kidnapping of Maria and takes Claude to the dam. San Andreas later depicts Claude in 1992 with Catalina, before GTA III’s 2001 setting. That earlier appearance belongs to the same 3D continuity and provides background without giving him a spoken explanation of his future actions.
