Inside the game

Claude navigates Liberty City’s criminal organizations after a bank robbery betrayal. A fully three-dimensional city makes exploration, driving and mission discovery central to the experience.

Setting: Liberty City. Original announced platforms: PlayStation 2.

This entry distinguishes the 3D universe from the other GTA continuities. Shared city names do not establish a shared narrative timeline.

The date above refers to the original release year. Subsequent ports, remasters and editions can differ in controls, features and available music.

A city becomes the main stage

Liberty City is divided into Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale. Early travel restrictions make the city unfold alongside story progression. Streets that first serve as routes between contacts gradually become familiar neighborhoods, shortcuts and dangerous faction territory.

Claude’s silence gives other characters room to define the city’s criminal hierarchy. After Catalina betrays him during a robbery, his work takes him through the Leone family, the Yakuza and other competing interests. The result is less a conventional heroic ascent than a sequence of working relationships with people who consider violence a business expense.

Missions and side activities

Story jobs mix driving, pursuit, combat and timed deliveries. The mission marker only starts the assignment: understanding the streets between objectives often determines whether it goes smoothly. Vehicle condition and positioning can matter before a firefight has even begun.

Taxi work, emergency-service activities, rampages, hidden packages and unique jumps provide goals outside the central plot. These systems give practical reasons to explore and learn the road network. They are distinct completion categories, so a finished story is not the same thing as a completed save file.

Planning a modern playthrough

Use separate manual saves rather than repeatedly overwriting a single slot. Relationships with gangs change during the story, and later hostility can make optional activities harder in certain areas. A completion-focused route should consider activities before advancing a faction conflict.

The original game and Definitive Edition share a setting and broad mission structure but differ in presentation and controls. Follow instructions for the edition you are playing, especially where aiming, checkpoints or accessibility features change the practical approach to an objective.
