The briefing

GTA V first released September 17, 2013, with three protagonists and a large Southern San Andreas setting. This September 2025 retrospective marks its twelfth anniversary and cites sales exceeding 215 million copies at that time. That is a dated milestone, not a continuously updated sales counter.

The game’s longevity has several separate foundations: subsequent hardware releases exposed it to new audiences, GTA Online continued adding activities, and PC communities built mods and roleplay experiences. Each offered a different reason to return to the same city. The source also recalls the original launch’s reported first-day revenue above US$800 million.

A retrospective explains why the title remained visible; it does not prove that every player stayed for the same reason. Story replay, competitive play, co-op businesses and community-created experiences serve different audiences. Reading the release timeline alongside Online’s update history gives a clearer account than treating twelve years of changing versions as one unchanged product.
