Setting: Vice City, 1986. Original announced platforms: PlayStation 2.
This entry distinguishes the 3D universe from the other GTA continuities. Shared city names do not establish a shared narrative timeline.
The date above refers to the original release year. Subsequent ports, remasters and editions can differ in controls, features and available music.
Ambition in the neon city
Vice City places Tommy Vercetti in an oceanfront city in 1986. The failed exchange at the beginning creates an immediate debt to Sonny Forelli, while Tommy’s search for answers introduces lawyers, gang leaders, socialites and rival business interests. The pastel skyline provides a bright setting for a story built around acquisition and betrayal.
Its two main islands and smaller connected areas create a compact world with clear changes in atmosphere. Ocean Beach, Downtown, Little Havana and the airport are useful landmarks rather than interchangeable scenery. Motorcycles and helicopters expand how the city can be crossed and observed.
Building an empire
Purchasable businesses are central to the later game. Completing a property’s associated work can turn it into an income-generating asset, tying mission progression to the physical places Tommy controls. Buying a property and completing its mission chain are different steps; owning the sign outside does not necessarily mean the business is operational.
The Malibu Club, film studio, taxi company and print works connect the empire-building idea to different styles of work. A player who only follows familiar contact letters may overlook asset objectives that are needed to move the broader story forward. Check properties as well as personal contacts when progress appears to stall.
Beyond the storyline
Hidden packages, rampages, unique jumps, emergency work and other activities add a second layer to the city. Keeping an independent checklist helps because geographic proximity does not imply that two nearby activities count toward the same completion requirement.
Vice City Stories takes place two years earlier in the 3D continuity. GTA VI’s return to Vice City belongs to the HD continuity. Familiar branding and a shared city name do not establish that Tommy appears in the later game’s history.
